Why Do Eyes Water When They Feel Dry?

5 min read

It may seem unusual for dry eyes to produce excessive watering. However, dryness and watering can occur together.

When the surface of the eye becomes irritated, the tear glands may suddenly produce reflex tears. These tears can temporarily wash over the eye but may not remain on the surface long enough to form a stable tear film. As a result, the eyes may continue to feel dry, burning or gritty even though tears are running down the cheeks.

Watery eyes may also have causes unrelated to dry eye, including allergy, eyelid problems, inflammation, contact-lens irritation or blockage of the tear-drainage system. An eye examination may help identify the likely reason.

Dry eye may cause burning, scratchiness, redness, light sensitivity and blurred vision. Prolonged use of computers, tablets and smartphones may also contribute by reducing blinking and increasing tear evaporation.

What is the tear film?

The tear film is a thin layer spread across the front surface of the eye every time a person blinks. It helps maintain comfort and provides a smooth optical surface for clear vision.

The tear film contains several components:

  • An oily layer that slows evaporation

  • A watery layer that provides moisture

  • A mucus-related layer that helps tears spread over the eye surface

If the quantity or quality of tears is affected, the eye surface may become irritated. The nervous system may respond by producing a sudden flow of reflex tears.

These reflex tears may drain quickly and may not provide the same lasting protection as a stable tear film.

How can dry eye cause watering?

Dry eye may cause watering through a cycle of irritation:

  1. The tear film becomes unstable or evaporates too quickly.

  2. The eye surface becomes irritated.

  3. The nerves on the eye surface send an irritation signal.

  4. The tear glands produce reflex tears.

  5. The excess tears drain away or spill over the eyelids.

  6. The underlying dryness may still remain.

This is why a person can experience both watery eyes and a dry, burning or gritty sensation.

Watering alone does not confirm dry eye. It should be considered along with other symptoms, the environment, contact-lens use, eyelid condition and the findings of an eye examination.

Common reasons why watery eyes may occur

Dry-eye irritation

An unstable tear film may cause burning, grittiness, redness and reflex watering. Read more about dry-eye evaluation and management.

Screen use

Long periods of laptop or mobile use may reduce blinking. This can increase tear evaporation and make the eye surface uncomfortable.

Eye allergy

Allergy may cause itching, redness, burning and watering. Itching is often an important clue, although allergy and dry eye may occur together.

Eyelid inflammation

Inflammation around the eyelid margins may affect blinking and tear-film quality. It can also make the eye surface more sensitive to wind, dust and screen use.

Meibomian-gland dysfunction

The meibomian glands produce oils that help reduce tear evaporation. If these glands do not function properly, the tear film may become unstable and trigger irritation or reflex watering.

Contact-lens irritation

Contact lenses may become uncomfortable when the eye surface is dry or inflamed. Watering, burning or blurred vision while wearing lenses should not be ignored.

Blocked tear drainage

Tears normally drain through small openings near the inner corners of the eyelids. If drainage is restricted, tears may collect and spill over the cheeks.

Eyelid-position problems

The eyelids help spread tears across the eye surface and direct them toward the drainage system. Changes in eyelid position or closure may therefore contribute to watering.

Environmental exposure

Smoke, dust, pollution, wind, low humidity and direct air-conditioning may irritate the eye surface and increase watering.

Is watering caused by dry eye or allergy?

Dry eye and allergy may produce overlapping symptoms, but some patterns can provide useful clues.

Dry eye is more commonly associated with:

  • Burning or stinging

  • Grittiness

  • Fluctuating vision

  • Eye fatigue

  • Discomfort during screen use

  • Symptoms that worsen in air-conditioning or wind

Allergy may be more strongly associated with:

  • Itching

  • Redness

  • Watering

  • Seasonal or environmental variation

  • Associated nasal symptoms

These patterns are not enough to make a diagnosis. If symptoms keep returning, an ophthalmologist can assess the eye surface, eyelids and tear film.

Can screen use cause watery eyes?

Screen use may contribute to watering indirectly. Concentrated viewing often reduces the frequency and completeness of blinking. As tears evaporate, the eye surface can become irritated and trigger reflex watering.

Screen-related watering may occur with:

  • Burning

  • Grittiness

  • Temporary blurred vision

  • Tired eyes

  • Headaches

  • Discomfort after prolonged reading

Screen exposure may be one contributing factor rather than the complete explanation. Other causes should be considered when watering is persistent or occurs even when the person is not using a screen.

What can I do for watery, dry-feeling eyes?

Some general measures may reduce irritation:

  • Take regular breaks during prolonged screen use.

  • Blink consciously while reading or working.

  • Reduce glare from the screen.

  • Keep the screen at a comfortable distance.

  • Avoid direct airflow from fans and air-conditioners.

  • Reduce exposure to smoke, dust and polluted air.

  • Remove contact lenses if they become painful or significantly uncomfortable.

  • Avoid rubbing the eyes.

  • Use lubricating drops only according to medical advice or product instructions.

  • Do not use steroid or antibiotic eye drops without professional guidance.

These measures may help with temporary discomfort, but recurrent watering needs assessment if it affects daily activities or vision.

When does watering require an eye examination?

Arrange an eye examination when watering:

  • Continues for several days or keeps returning

  • Occurs together with burning or gritty sensations

  • Causes fluctuating or blurred vision

  • Interferes with reading, work or driving

  • Makes contact lenses uncomfortable

  • Is associated with repeated redness

  • Occurs without an obvious environmental trigger

  • Does not improve after basic measures

The examination may consider tear production, tear-film stability, eyelid structure, the ocular surface, vision correction and possible allergy or drainage-related problems.

Warning signs requiring prompt care

Seek prompt medical attention if watering is accompanied by:

  • Sudden reduction in vision

  • Significant eye pain

  • Severe redness

  • Marked sensitivity to light

  • Thick or unusual discharge

  • Eye injury or chemical exposure

  • Severe symptoms while wearing contact lenses

  • A sudden change affecting only one eye

Can watery eyes be related to Sjögren’s syndrome?

Sjögren’s syndrome can be associated with dry-eye symptoms, and irritation may sometimes cause reflex watering. However, watery or dry eyes alone do not diagnose Sjögren’s syndrome.

When persistent eye dryness occurs together with dry mouth, fatigue or joint symptoms, a doctor may consider whether wider medical evaluation is appropriate. Read more about Sjögren’s syndrome and dry eye.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my eyes water if they are dry?

Dryness can irritate the eye surface and trigger reflex tears. These tears may drain quickly and may not correct the underlying tear-film instability.

Can dry eye cause excessive watering?

Yes, dry-eye irritation can cause reflex watering. However, allergy, eyelid problems and blocked tear drainage can also cause excessive watering.

How can I tell whether watery eyes are caused by allergy?

Itching, redness, watering and seasonal or environmental symptoms may suggest allergy, but similar symptoms can occur with other conditions. An examination may be needed.

Can mobile phone use cause watery eyes?

Prolonged mobile use may reduce blinking and increase tear evaporation. The resulting irritation may trigger watering in some people.

Should I use eye drops for watery eyes?

The appropriate eye drop depends on the likely cause. Lubricating drops may help some patients, but steroid, antibiotic or prescription drops should not be used without medical advice.

When should watery eyes be checked?

Arrange an eye examination when watering persists, repeatedly returns, affects vision, interferes with daily activities or occurs with pain, severe redness, discharge or light sensitivity.
